New & Improved Stuff

February 13, 2017 by Reno

Betcha can’t miss that big group of sliding photos on the front page!

And don’t fail to visit these:

  • In the Society menu, look under Gatherings and Projects
  • In Galleries, check out the links for Railroad, Events, Later Years, Various and Society
  • In History/Articles and Stories the latest additions are
    The Sum of its Parts,
Mill Workers Buy Mill Owner’s House,
    Big Weekend,
    Dedicating Engine’s New Home,
    School Life, the Tabloid

And there are other assorted improvements here and there.

What else is new?

January 30, 2017 by Reno

We’ve resurrected a number of features and articles from past years, including Archives, which is a collection of front page suggestions for things you might find interesting. (After a month or so, these little blurbs are moved off the front page to make room for new ones.)

Also, we’ve brought back the Haynes Legacy section, that is, we’ve restyled all the pages to make them presentable. And there are new editions of Train Shooters, Baby Week in Cliffside and the 1923 Special Edition of the Sun. The latter is a comprehensive story of Cliffside.

And, from time to time, we bring back improved editions of Photo Galleries. Check this section often for new additions.

That is all.

End of the year “catch up”

December 28, 2016 by Reno

You’ll re-enjoy the big ol’ section called “Cliffside in 1922.” It was a dazzling year for Cliffside, when both the new Memorial Building and the school building were dedicated. There are speeches, profiles and news stories and, as an added new attraction, we’ve put the year in context with the 1922 section of Don Bailey’s book Cliffside, North Carolina: The First Half Century.

Remember six-man football? Never heard of it? See Don Bailey’s (again??!!) survey of the game; when, how and where it was played. Don’t miss “Football on a Smaller Scale,” a brand-new addition to Remember Cliffside.

Another new offering in this update is “My Time in the Town,” Benjamin Bailey’s memories of his youth in Cliffside.

One more thing, last call for calendars. We still have several of the Roy Lee Harris 2017 Cliffside Calendars left (with 25 photos of people and places). Just send $10 (plus $3 for mailing if you’re not from around Cliffside) to “Calendar,” 10612 Round Rock Rd., Charlotte NC 28277.”

Jessie Campbell Carpenter’s Obituary Collection

December 7, 2016 by Reno

A great part of history is the people who lived it, and the basics of a person can be found in his or her obituary. Over about 40 years Jessie Carpenter clipped and saved the death notices of Cliffside folk (116 in all) and her granddaughter, Linda Webster Poteat (since deceased), shared them with us. You can select specific names of the deceased from an index or browse through the 31 pages of Cliffside’s past. Start here, with Jessie’s own story.

The Cliffside Clock Tower

Our town clock was installed in 1920, and for over half a century tolled the quarter hours from atop the R. R. Haynes Memorial Building. When the building was razed in the late 1970s this new tower for the old timepiece was erected on the site of Mr. Haynes' original Cliffside home. Although the property of the county, the Cliffside Historical Society has assumed responsibility for maintaining this beloved antique.
