Amos Owens: Rutherford’s Most Colorful Character

Part 5 of 5: Fun Reading

Book cover: Mountain Spirits by Joseph Earl Dabney

Joseph Earl Dabney has written several books, including More Mountain Spirits. It too features tales of moonshiners, and even has detailed instructions for building a copper still!

These are just two delightful and unusual offerings from Bright Mountain Books, who has a large collection of books keyed to the Southern Appalachian culture.

The Cliffside Clock Tower

Our town clock was installed in 1920, and for over half a century tolled the quarter hours from atop the R. R. Haynes Memorial Building. When the building was razed in the late 1970s this new tower for the old timepiece was erected on the site of Mr. Haynes' original Cliffside home. Although the property of the county, the Cliffside Historical Society has assumed responsibility for maintaining this beloved antique.
