Republishing R.R. Haynes Biography

In the early 1950s, following her husband’s passing, Ina Fortune Haynes (Mrs. Grover C. Haynes) set about writing a small biography of her father-in-law, Raleigh Rutherford Haynes.

Front and back covers of book.
The new expanded edition.

The book was an enterprise encouraged and funded by Ina’s brother-in-law, Charles H. Haynes. “Mr. Charley,” as many people called him, was now retired. He had run the Company and the town since R. R., Charles’ father, died in early 1917. Now he wanted his father’s legacy documented and preserved.

At some point it was decided to give a copy to every family in Cliffside, and to libraries and schools in a wide area. The book was printed in both hard and soft cover, 2,500 copies in all.

Today, three generations later, few of them remain. Perhaps you can discover one at “grandma’s house,” or in a library somewhere, but only if you look really hard.

Our organization’s goal is to collect and preserve the history and memories of Cliffside, and Mrs. Haynes’ book well deserves preservation. Therefore, to make her work available for today’s generations and to revive the memories of the author herself, we’ve published, with her son Grover Jr.’s permission, a new edition, shown above.

It has 128 pages, including a new preface and a profile of the author, and 51 historical photos.

Book held open to reveal a full-page photo and, on the other, a listing of Haynes' descendants.

His story was also the story of Cliffside, the town he had so carefully planned and developed. Since Ina had lived in Cliffside since girlhood, and married into the Haynes family, very little research was necessary, for she had “lived” the story.
