Green Acres

Picture contributor: Roy Lee Harris Collection

Lige Harris, bucket in hand, has just scattered feed for his flock of about two dozen chickens.
Green Acres

Elijah “Lige” Harris, Roy Lee’s father, was a favorite subject for his son’s photographic efforts. Thankfully, Roy Lee’s work documents how we lived back in those days. For those lucky enough to own land, as the Harris’ did out in Fairview, it was the best of both worlds: You could make a living in the mill, and enjoy the benefits of farming, on whatever scale you wished. With this pen full of pullets, this family certainly had no need to buy meat or eggs. It was a treasured time.
