The Length of the County

Picture contributor: Sherry Harris Phelps

Shot with a long lens from the highest bluff in Cliffside, we see the school and 25 miles beyond the mountains appear across the horizon.
The County

If we don’t see all of Rutherford County in this photo, we see much of it, from the southeast corner to the snowcapped peaks at the northwest edge.

It’s another Roy Lee Harris treasure. He may have been testing a new telephoto lens, and was shooting from a vantage point somewhere at Fairview. As close as the mountains are, about 25 miles, in our mind they always seemed far away. So it’s always a surprise, as we’re traveling west on the Cliffside-Boiling Springs Highway, to look over and see them looming so large.
