Repaving Cliffside Street

Picture contributor: Sherry Harris Phelps

Two little girls standing safely on a rise as rollers pack asphalt on one lane of Cliffside Street.
Repaving Cliffside Street

It was always exciting to watch the paving crews, for they came along so rarely. This may have been about the third time in the street’s history that fresh pavement was put down. That’s Roy Lee Harris’ daughters Peggy and Sherry transfixed by the big machines. Other than the little boy on the porch, the Harris’ seem to be the only observers. The year is about 1972.

Here are a couple more shots Roy Lee made that day.

At left, a roller follows the paving machine, which in turn is following a dump truck feeding its hopper with fresh asphalt. At right, a closer look at a roller machine and its operator.
