The Old Ice Plant

Picture contributor: Linda Webster Poteat

An old-timey pickup truck is backed up to the ice plant loading dock. It's driver is in front of the vehicle. Mill houses can be seen in the distance.

It’s sometime in the 1920s. Tim Carpenter is cranking his truck, preparing to haul away a load of ice. It’s a nice view of muddy Railroad Street.

Tim married Jessie Campbell, daughter of Andrew Lee and Sarah Beal Campbell. Thomas Timmons Carpenter and Jessie had two daughters, Daisy and Sarah Pauline. The latter was known as Polly, who married Gaynes Webster. They had a daughter, Linda, who contributed this photo.

Polly Carpenter and her mother, Jessie, lived for years in the household of her grandfather, Andrew Lee Campbell. Andrew was also the father of Nora, Luther, Louella and Clarence, whose names and faces many of us remember well.
