The Beekeeper

Picture contributor: Sherry Harris Phelps

Prominent Cliffside man stands in his well-kept yard near a row of hive boxes on benches.
Beekeeper

Actually he was a beekeeper only by hobby, for the fun of it, and to provide his family and neighbors with some real home-made, delicious honey. He’s W.W. (Walt) Suggs, the town’s cobbler, although no one ever referred to him as such—he was always called “the shoeshop man” or “the man who fixes shoes.”

The Suggs family lived in Fairview. It’s early summer of 1950. Their neat yard and garden show the pride and effort that most Cliffside folks took in their surroundings. The Suggs even provided blossoms for the bees.

Walt, in his pajamas, may have been recovering from an illness. He died four years later at 66.
