Old Main Street

Picture contributor: Don Bailey

An old postcard showing houses along the unpaved North Main Street in Cliffside. A buggy in the distance is moving up the road.
Old Main Street

Old Cliffside postcards keep turning up. Don Bailey, who keeps a watchful eye on eBay and searches the stalls at collectors’ shows for Cliffside memorabilia, found another great view of 1910s Cliffside.

You’re looking north from the 3rd Street intersection, or thereabouts. The Haynes’ house is at the top of the hill. Looks like a little garden has been started at the near house. Imagine sitting on one of those porches in those days. You’d hear a slow-moving buggy coming long before you could see whose it was, and the soft clip-clopping would go on for four or five minutes, before you could finally concentrate again on your Saturday Evening Post.

The physical card is a little moth-eaten but Anthony Scruggs, son of Joe (of Claude and Aquilla’s family), digitally restored it for us.
