War Effort

Picture contributor: Shirley Crawford Thompson

A number of men on and around an open truck, about to pick up scrap metal.
War Effort

Very often during World War II, the people of Cliffside would come together to do what they could to help on the home front. On this day men of the town were driving up and down the streets in someone’s truck collecting scrap metal. At the moment this was taken they may have been moving through Duke Village.

On the ground, from left: Elise Brown, Tubby Hawkins, Tom Davis, Harry Tarleton.

On the truck: Jesse Honeycutt, Otto Matheny, B. B. Goode, Pete Hill, Francis Fowler, Ike Biggerstaff, James Tinkler, Harley Beatty, J. C. Hames.
