Autumn Leaves

Picture contributor: Harold Clardy

A high view of the landscape showing the old church in the glow of late afternoon.
Autumn Leaves in Cliffside

One afternoon in the fall of 1954 or thereabouts, Harold Clardy climbed the water tower and snapped this fantastic photo of the Methodist Church with Cliffside Street and Highland—and that magnificent foliage—in the background. Shelby Highway winds eastward up the center of the picture; Highway 221-A curves to the south (lower right). The house whose roof appears below the bridge was once a blacksmith shop. Later, in the ’40s, Harold lived in that house with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Holloway White.
