Vital Information in 1919

Unlawful to Remove or Deface This Card. RULES FOR MAINTENANCE OF EARTH PIT PRIVIES  1. The privy must be housed in a building that will afford a reasonable degree of protection from bad weather conditions.  2. The walls, floor and seat of the privy and the grounds immediaely adjacent to the building must be kept in a clean and decent condition.  3. Never allow chickens or other animals to harbor in the building.  4. Privy seat cover must be properly hinged and kept closed at all times when seat is unoccupied.  5. Inside vent holes shall be well screened at all times.  6. Flies shall be excluded from the pit at all times.  7. When the pit becomes filled to within 18 inches of the top the privy must be removed to a new pit, and the old pit completely filled with earth.  8. If the pit should cave in, a new curbed pit must be provided.  9. To prevent odors sprinkle a cupful of kerosene each week over the contents of the pit.  10. Keep all ashes, garbage and trash out of pit. Fine for noncompliance with these rules: $5.00 minimum; $50 maximum. Prepared by DIVISION OF SANITARY ENGINEERING, NORTH CAROLINA STATE BOARD OF HEALTH.
