Mud Cut Derby

East 5th Avenue, or Mud Cut, was the perfect hill for racing. And home-made racers were the perfect vehicles for a day of competition. This was about 1949 when an event of this size would attract a reporter/photographer team all the way from Shelby! Sam Davis describes the races in one of his Flashbacks.

A clipping from the Shelby Star with a photo showing four racers seated on their homemade cars, made out of everything from packing boxes to old tricycle wheels. They are Jerry Holland, 1st place winner of $20; second place winner, Johnny Condrey ($10); Buddy Houser was third ($5); and in fourth place was George Haynes, also $5.

Clipping provided by George Haynes.
