Thompson 340705

July 5, 1934

Cliffside, July 3 — A man of prominence in this community is D. C. Whitaker. He is a man of striking influence on the youth of the village. His walk of life every day is a great mark to which one might strive. An American Legion man, he saw training routine in Texas, he worked for several years in Akron, Ohio, but today his great aim is to lead the youth of this village. He is ever active, naturally, in American Legion work and is outstanding in his work with the Baptist church of this village. He is the Sunday school’s superintendent. Here is a man, who, when he walks down the street of our village, lends an atmosphere of dignity, of gentility. Here is a man who is an asset—a man who is an example which many young fellows need today.

We dropped around Lake Lure and those parts last Sunday. Probably the most suitable of the bathing beaches hereabouts, Lake Lure is having a thriving clientele during the hot days. This swimming spot, or Rainbow Lake, in South Carolina, are the only “swimming holes” at all suitable to the more discriminating bathers in this section of North and South Carolina. Several other places on this county should be abandoned and, if necessary, by law. There may be suitable private pools in some of the homes of this county but other than those the two bathing spots above mentioned are recommended solely by the scribbler of this column.

Having my insane moment: I’m Heading For the Last Round-Up Because I Just Could[n’t?] Take It. When the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day. You’ll be My Only “Blue Prelude.” I Must Not Be an Angel But it Ain’t No Sin If My Hat’s On the Side of My Head. Riding Around in the Rain. Ain’t Lazy Just Dreaming So Good-nite Lovely Little Lady. We’ll See You Tomorrow For Cocktails For Two. In the meantime: All I Do is Dream of You.

Wilson Mills, youngest transport pilot (more than 200 solo hours) and Joe Cannon, equally as youthful, are in the midst of the Carolina Air Tour. We often talk with these two youngsters who know their airplane controls. The two kids are O. K.-there is none of the swell-head affliction with this flying duo.

Funny thought: C. A. Denson ushering at an organ recital.

Thoughts while shaving: The Taj Mahal in the newsreels… the questionable business soundness of the Empire State Building… Guy Lombardo and his orchestra, doubtless, is the greatest of the “big time” musical units. Guy takes all the boys for an airing on his private cruiser… B. B. Goode is always smiling… I remember when “curves” had something to do with a bend in the highway… The boys putting on The Courier contest are very likeable chaps… That boy being rushed into Mercy Hospital, Charlotte, with a practically severed foot. And the gushing blood!

We look forward with a great deal of enthusiasm to the time when our downtown district here is to be paved. Everything is in readiness and the improvement in appearance this will naturally make is one we are anticipating with interest. Cliffside is growing as the center of this section of Rutherford county. A suggestion: Just notice the crowds in our business section during business days.

And we’ll see you in Chicago.

The fountain on the square in Cliffside, its water completely frozen .
Cliffside's Fountain
"This pleasant landmark has been recently drippingly draped in a coat of ice. With warmer days, though, we watch lazy fish in the pool, which is formed at the fountain’s base."
