Pitching In

Clayton and Jasper
Clayton Scruggs and Jasper McDaniel

It was an outdoor cookout or barbecue, probably in the 1970s, for which one of the taller men in town, Clayton “Slim” Scruggs, and one of the shortest, Jasper “Little Mac” McDaniel, donned his wife’s apron and helped with the cooking.

Sad to say, events like this happen only rarely, if ever, in present day Cliffside. The social cohesion in the community once supplied by the mills is no longer present. Residents now are so few and scattered there’s little interest, and no organization to sponsor and organize such an event.

Alas.

However, we were able to dredge up from the archive a few photos from picnics past. Are you in the pictures? Click one to start slideshow.
