Second Graders Visit The Courier
By Bill Blair
The Courier has always been happy to have people to come to the office and see how a newspaper is put together and just recently we proved our point by playing host to approximately 40 second students from Cliffside.
They were accompanied by their teachers, Miss Mary Mabry and Miss Elizabeth Smyre.
The visit came as a surprise to me and being situated where I am I can’t see the lower half of the front door. I did, however, notice the front door swing open and stay open. The next thing I noticed was six and seven-year olds marching single file past the door to Stover’s and my section of the office.
All were neatly dressed, hair slicked back and not saying a word. Still marching in a line and heading for the back shop, they continued to swarm the office.
After being fascinated by the machinery they departed in the same orderly fashion.
They must have enjoyed it and made a day of touring other business establishments around Forest City, A few days later after they were by here our bookkeeper, Peggy Gilbert, received the following letter:
Dear Mrs. Gilbert:
We enjoyed seeing the printing machines. We went to some other places besides the Forest City Courier. We went to the Fire Dept. When we went to the park we saw the golf course. We saw the swimming pool.
We went to Coca-Cola dept. We got a Coca-Cola pencil. I’m writing my letter with it. We got a Coca-Cola too. We drank the Coca-Cola then we got on the bus. But I had to get off because I took my Coca-Cola with me. Then I got back on again.
We went to WBBO.I have sung on WBBO before. And then we went to the dog and cat hospital. This is all I can say so I’ll close my letter now.
Love,
Polly Robinson
Polly’s letter is only one of many received by Peggy. All of these were printed very neatly and each gave their version of the trip. For second graders, it was surprising how well they could write.
Thank very much Polly, and all of the others too.
We know Polly Robinson today as Polly Robinson Crawley
