Cliffside People Alarmed By Strange Animal

Cliffside People Alarmed By Strange Animal

The Forest City Courier, May 7, 1931

Did you ever see a “Booger?”

For the past few weeks a “varmint” has been pestering Cliffside and waking people from their peaceful slumber with its spine-chilling, hair-raising voices. Several have been real close to it. The first of last week it decided by several that it was a “hyena” and some came into the Memorial Building and borrowed the secretary’s dictionary and after much perusing said, “Yep, here it is.” They were looking at the picture of a hyena. Several boys and men have been chasing it around at night. Some said it was a stray dog while others said they never saw a dog that looked like that thing.

Monday morning some men with a gun cornered the “booger” on the bank of the pond just above the dam. Several in the mill on the opposite side of the pond were watching. A man raised his gun and fired when the “booger” leaped into the water and soon sank. Then boats were secured and they spent some time “fishing” for the thing trying to bring it to the surface so they could get a good clean view. The last account we had they had not been successful. Well, any way, if it has been shot and also drowned, we guess the people hereabouts will not be awakened nights by eerie howls.
