The Jolly Book is back

October 31, 2016 by Reno

Richard Jolly, a veteran of the Civil War and an active member of the Ku Klux Klan, wrote his book of memoirs in 1924, toward the end of his life. Beyond his personal revelations, he profiles his ancestors, his family and descendants, acquaintances and a large number of neighboring families. They all lived in the area of Cleveland County now known as Number One Township, and the upper section of Cherokee County (SC) around Gaffney.

You may even find some of your own kin among the dozens of names listed within. You’ll definitely get a sense of what life was like in those olden days.

Read Richard Merdy Jolly’s The Story of My Reminiscences.”

The Cliffside Clock Tower

Our town clock was installed in 1920, and for over half a century tolled the quarter hours from atop the R. R. Haynes Memorial Building. When the building was razed in the late 1970s this new tower for the old timepiece was erected on the site of Mr. Haynes' original Cliffside home. Although the property of the county, the Cliffside Historical Society has assumed responsibility for maintaining this beloved antique.
