Tomb Builders 8

Tomb Builder

8 All the elements of the tomb are in position. The support and hoisting timbers still lay about. It’s definitely summer (the summer of 1917, we’d guess) for the lady surveying the site is carrying a parasol. How many Cliffside children have climbed up on those cold marble benches just because we could?

Job completed. Now to remove the lumber around the big tomb.

Photo from the Blanche Edwards Campbell collection, contributed by Carolyn Green Waters.

Over the decades the Haynes gravesite has been a favorite background for Sunday strollers' photos. It was—and is—a reminder to generations of the great man's role in Cliffside's legacy.
