Tomb Builders
5Think of the manpower required for such a project in those days. It probably took this crew of six or eight men over a week to set up the ramp, move the marble, install it, then tear down and remove the timbers. By the look of the stacks of lumber in the right background, they weren’t at all sure what materials the job would require. You can bet that, more than once, somebody was sent “back to the shop” to fetch some needed item they hadn’t anticipated.
This photo shows the same view of Academy Street from the opposite side of the ramp. It also shows a large mechanical jack used to level and support the structure.
