3 The shrubs and grave markers in these photos suggest this area has been a cemetery for some time. It was probably established as a proper cemetery around 1903, and there may have been a few graves here even earlier. Read a history of the cemetery in the Landmarks section.

This view shows levering and rolling of crated materials to the site. There is a vehicle the in the background, but it is hard to determine if it is a truck or an automobile. I remember some of the oldsters referring to the chain-driven trucks the mill had in its early years, and I wonder if this may have been one of them.

The Haynes Tomb

Over the decades the Haynes gravesite has been a favorite background for Sunday strollers' photos. It was—and is—a reminder to generations of the great man's role in Cliffside's legacy.
