Cliffside Story – 1923

The Sun logo and title "Special Edition 1923"

A tattered fragment of the actual front page of the paper. Headline reads 'Cliffside and Avondale--a monument to the historic Haynes family." The Rutherford County Sun, always a friend of our town, in 1923 published a “Land of the Sky Development Edition,” an eight-page section devoted entirely to Cliffside’s (and, to a lesser extent Avondale’s) remarkable story. Large portions of those pages, however, were taken up by advertisements for Cliffside’s commercial interests, proving that then, as now, newspapers will likely print anything as long as you pay for the ink and paper. As you read the contents of these brittle and torn pages, keep in mind that at the time Cliffside was less than 25 years old.
