Abbreviation Guide

These are some of the least obvious abbreviations used on the household records:

Relationship: Head = Head of household
Race: W = White; B = Black; MU = Mulatto
Age: Infants ages are given in months: 1 7/12 = 1 year, 7 months;
3/12 = 3 months
Marital: m1 = 1st marriage; m2 = 2nd marriage; s = Single; wd = widow(er)

Notes

At the upper right of each household record you’ll find the page number where that family can be found in the Crow’s book.

The census enumerator made no distinction between the family names Green and Greene. She omitted the final “e” on everyone with that name. She also consistently left off the “e” on the given names Claude and Maude.

Some names on the household lists are linked to additional information about the person.
