Cliffside’s Bustin’ Out All Over

By Reno Bailey

These days [in fall 2015] visitors to Cliffside will notice a layer of new blacktop on Main Street, and three more homes going up, in addition to the Swing house, the first new house to be built in Old Cliffside in generations.

Look up old Main Street toward new homes.
At the junction of 221-A and Old Main Street, looking up the hill toward the Clock Tower. Two new houses are visible on either side of the street. (James Harris photo)
A view of the intersection with Hwy 221-A. We see one lane of the old street is paved.
Another angle of the paving crew. Who knew this would happen? We thought the state had given us up for dead. (James Harris photo)

An incompleted house without siding.
On the north side of Mud Cut (W. 5th Street) across from the Clock Tower. The old Presbyterian Church stood on this site before burning down in the 1920s. (Neal Hunter photo)
Another house under construction.
This one is on the south corner of Mud Cut and Main. We’d give you the owners’ names if we knew them. The Ray Jackson’s lived on this lot in the ’50s. (Neal Hunter photo)

Yet another house abuilding on Main St.
On the west side of Main Street, just north of the Clock Tower is this nice house with a wrap-around porch. You don’t hardly see them no more. (Neal Hunter photo)
Workmen behind house. Sheathing and Tyvek insulating wrap have been applied.
A rear view of the same house. Someone is going to love living here, especially once Nordstrom’s and Neiman-Marcus open their stores on Drugstore Street. (Neal Hunter photo)
