The heart of “downtown.” We’re looking south from just in front of the store building site. The most startling change you notice: the mill office is gone. It used to stand just behind those two flag poles. To the right, the street leading down to the finishing plant, previously called South Main, appears much wider. The old gate house, previously in the area to the left of the white sign, is no longer there. Between the flag poles, replacing the old fish pond, is a monument of sorts, the Get-up Bell (see next page). What work that’s done here takes place in the finishing plant, in the center and right areas of the picture. The older section of the mill, the manufacturing plant (beneath the tower), is used only for storage.
