Cliffside Historical Society

About Us

The Cliffside Historical Society wants you!

The Cliffside Historical Society
is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to collect and preserve the history, memories and lore of Cliffside, in the form of documents, articles, photographs and written or recorded memoirs. This Web site is a part of that effort.

We need members and contributors. The individual membership fee is only $10 per year ($15 per family)—and you can buy lifetime memberships. Cash donations beyond that will be most appreciated.

Members (called “Friends of Cliffside”) receive The Cliffside Chimes, newsletters filled with history and memories, news of the projects we're undertaking and the progress we're making, and previews of material coming soon on Remember Cliffside.

There are four such newsletters a year. Here is a sample of one of the issues in this PDF file. We hope you will check it out.

If you are not already a member, we need you—not only for your cash contributions, but to become involved in one or more of our projects. We need people to do research: to interview and record the stories of our older residents and former residents of Cliffside and nearby areas; to help search for facts, identify photos, create archives, etc. We also need people who like to write, who are curious, who like to get to the bottom of things. You don't have to live in or even near Cliffside to help.

The Web Site and Cliffside Chimes:

Reno and Betty Bailey edit and maintain RememberCliffside.com. Using material from many sources, they update the site with stories and photos at the start of each month. And every quarter they publish the Society's newsletter, the Cliffside Chimes, which is mailed to over 200 members and friends of the Society.

The photo is not of our board, nor even our officers. The young man at the upper right is Charles H. Haynes and the others are probably some of his friends at Guilford College, about 1895. (From the Hazel Haynes Bridges collection)

Society News

Making Things Right Posted Sept. 1, 2011

Sometimes, if no one else will, you have to take the bull by the horns. Noticing that this historical marker in West Henrietta, honoring R. R. Haynes, was suffering the ravages of time (and an errant auto), and finding no other entity eager to address the issue, our Society, or at least two of our members—Phillip White and James L. Harris—leapt (leaped?) into action. The restoration is currently in progress, but the sign will soon be repainted on a new steel pole.

And now ...

And now, sporting a new paint job (by Lipscomb Signs of Forest City) and a sturdy new post, it is reinstalled, thanks to James Harris and nearby resident, Luciano Flores. You're welcome, Henrietta.

It's Never Easy Posted Sept. 1, 2011

There's always something getting in the way of progress. In this case, that "something" is a whole bunch of somethings, namely honeybees. And they don't pose a problem down low where they can be reached. Oh, no. They're 50 feet up. Just to get a close look at them, and where they get into the tower, will require a 60-foot crane or lift ($375 a day or thereabouts) and a bee expert to deal with them (at what cost we don't yet know). Only after we dispose of the bees can we proceed with the clock face restoration and scrubbing, sealing and painting the tower. Onward and upward.

A Society Publication Posted July 1, 2011

We've now published the first of several planned Cliffside books. This one is more of a physical restoration, in that it's a republishing of Ina Fortune Haynes classic biography of her father-in-law Raleigh Rutherford Haynes.

Printed in 1954, about 2,500 copies were given to every family then in Cliffside, and to libraries and schools throughout the area.

Today, copies are scarce, and our purpose was to reintroduce the old treasure to today's generations.

Read more about the new book, and how to order a copy or two (or a dozen).

Our Society at Work Posted Dec. 31, 2010

Following our restoration work on the town clock in the summer of 2010, and the rededication of the tower on October 9, we appealed to the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners to give us official and exclusive authority to maintain the clock in the future. This is the result of our request.

AGREEMENT
This agreement is entered into and effective the 1st day of November, 2010 be and between the County of Rutherford, hereinafter referred to at the "County" and the Cliffside Historical Society, hereinafter referred to as "Cliffside."

WITNESSETH
Whereas, in 2004 the County purchased the property on which the Cliffside Clock is located from Cone Mills; and

Whereas, the Cliffside clock which is a landmark in the former mill town had not been operational in a number of years; and

Whereas, Cliffside had a great interest in restoring the clock; and

Whereas, the Cliffside Historical Society raised approximately $15,000 for the fund for the restoration of the Cliffside clock; and

Whereas, Cliffside has spent approximately $7,000 ($3,500 from Cliffside fund and $3,500 from Rutherford County) to restore the clock machinery; and

Whereas, Cliffside will use part of the remaining funds for refurbishing the four clock faces; and

Whereas, Cliffside will continue the fund raising campaign seeking further foundation donations to provide a cushion for contingencies for the maintenance of the clock.

Now, therefore, be it resolved, that because of the fund raising efforts by Cliffside; the expenditures by Cliffside for the restoration of the clock; Cliffside's commitment to the clock's preservations; and the requirement for expert maintenance on the clock, Rutherford County does hereby grant to Cliffside access to the clock's compartments and the exclusive authority to maintain the mechanical workings, the dials, and the faces of the Cliffside Clock.

Be it further resolved that this agreement will continue in effect as long as the Cliffside Historical Society remains in existence and the special fund is sufficient to continue the clock's maintenance.

Be it also further resolved that Rutherford County will continue to maintain the grounds and the brick clock structure and will provide the liability and property insurance on the property.

Adopted this the 1st day of November, 2010.

The 4th Annual Society Gathering Posted Nov. 1, 2010

The crowd assembles at the clock tower for the rededication. The ceremony's speakers.

This year, the Gathering consisted of two parts: First, we held a rededication ceremony for the old town clock tower, celebrating the second restoration of the clock in 18 years; a new display of a restored and enhanced 1942 Cliffside map; and a new bronze plaque in the face of the tower memorializing the town's founder, R. R. Haynes.

Photos by Marilyn Moore Kerr See videos of the entire ceremony »

Then, in the Baptist church, Mrs. Myrtle Mashburn was given a "lifetime achievement" plaque for her musical contribution to the community and the area. Phillip White presents the award; it's accepted by her son Jerry.

The 3rd Annual Society Gathering Posted Nov. 1, 2009

It was the largest Gathering yet. Over 100 members and interested citizens convened on the evening of October 9, to hear Ann Culbreth and Brenda Walters, with a Powerpoint presentation, talk about their father, H.C. Beatty, Cliffside School's principal for many years. Several members of the audience also spoke about their experiences as students under Mr. Beatty's firm hand.

H C Beatty

Eugene LipscombAnd a touching tribute was paid to Eugene “Cheetah” Lipscomb, a life-long resident of Cliffside, whose extraordinary work in rock masonry has added much to the town's appeal.

His two sons, Martin and Robert accepted the award for their father, who could not be present. James Harris, who presented the award, and Wayne Smith, have known Mr. Lipscomb since their youth, told how his integrity and wisdom have influenced their lives.

Phillip White, who succeeded Mr. Beatty as principal of the school, was the evening's master of ceremonies. He told stories of both Mr. Beatty and Mr. Lipscomb.

Transcripts and audio of portions of the talks are forthcoming. You can view more photos made that evening, and during the next day's festivities in the Current section.

The 2nd Annual Society Gathering Posted Nov. 1, 2008

This year's Gathering on Friday night, October 10, had a strong panel of speakers: Jim Ruppe, Ben Honeycutt and Don Bailey, who were was captured in these nice photos by Marilyn Moore Kerr.

Jim, Ben and Don

Over 90 enthusiastic friends of Cliffside had a grand time enjoying themselves and the speakers, who related their childhood and boyhood memories. Don gave an interesting talk on the history of Cliffside churches. On this night and the next day, we gained 35 new members and 24 renewals.

Jim, vice president of the Society, extends this message:

Thanks for all your help in making the Cliffside Historical Society’s weekend a most successful one! New memberships and renewals were up over last year. Souvenir sales also showed an increase. The hard work by a number of people helped to make the events a success.

In the corporate world, it would be time to do a post-mortem, while the events are still on everyone’s mind. This poll will be used to guide the Society for next year’s meeting, determining what went right, what went wrong, and ways we can improve next year’s meeting and Cliffside Day.

This would include everything from initial planning to the program, facilities, selection of speakers and any items that you feel need to be addressed or would be helpful. Your input is important and any comment, no matter how brief would be appreciated!

Survey

If you're from Cliffside, we'd like to know what happened to you. We've devised an online survey sheet containing a number of questions about your parents, your life in and away from Cliffside, about your present whereabouts, your education, your family, etc.

You can type your responses right onto the two pages, then print the document. Or you can save the document and attach it to an email. Send it to rbailey@carolina.rr.com.
