Photo of the Month - Sept 2005
“Trestle Ruins”

Contributor: Ginny Ann Reid

Trestle Ruins

The photo of the month for May 2005 (identified as the “Horseshoe Bridge over Second Broad River”) was the only evidence we've run across that suggests the trestle ever existed. Until now. Recently a Henrietta resident, Johnny Phillips, gave a number of photos to Ginny Ann Reid, including the photo above, about which Mr. Phillips has no information. The only thing that is certain, it was made by Hames Studio (as was the May photo). After comparing the structures, we're guessing it's the same trestle. We're also guessing it was destroyed by the flood of 1916, although historian and researcher Joyce Hunter was unable to find any references to the trestle in 1916 news accounts.

If you have any knowledge of the structure, or details of the damage caused by the 1916 flood in Rutherford or Cleveland county, please contact us.
