“Double Wedding”

Double Wedding

The date: June 1, 1937. The place: Beside the lily pond in Mr. Charley's backyard. The occasion: The double wedding on of Paul Bridges & Hazel Haynes and Jim Spoon & Margaret Haynes.

Margaret Loretta Haynes, was the daughter of the late Robert E. Haynes, son of R.R. The family of James Merritt Spoon II owned Spoon's Ice Cream parlors in Charlotte. Later Margaret and Jimmy, a pharmacist by trade, owned a drug store in Belmont and then in Charlotte.

Margaret's nephew, Jim Haynes, six years old at the time, tells this story:

“I carried Aunt Margaret’s long train from the house around to the back yard where the ceremony was to take place. I was suppose to hold the train until the after the ceremony was over, but I got restless and walked off over to the fish pond and fell in, right in the middle of the 'I do’s,' white duck suit and all. That was the end of the wedding for me, I had to leave and go down the street to my Grandmother Simmons' house and stay until the wedding was over.”

Here are some closer views with names of those in the ceremony.
