I Remember, by Mabel Bridges Cargill

Introduction

Mabel BridgesPerhaps you have seen or read the memories of Mabel Cargill, which were printed and distributed among Cliffside natives over a decade ago. Paula Cargill, her daughter, describes how they came about: “In 1982, I was at the Institute of Gerontology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in studies for a graduate specialist certificate in gerontology. As a project for one of my courses, I had planned to create an oral history from the taped reminiscing of Mother and Uncle Paul, the only survivors of their 'family of origin.' He died suddenly while I was in Ann Arbor that summer. In time, Mother turned on the tape recorder and, at one sitting, recalled just what is transcribed.” Our thanks to Mabel Cargill's children, Paula, Anne and John, for their help in making this important document widely available.
