Charles
Herman Sparks
Charles Herman was born on 16 April 1925 in Cliffside.
He was the third born of Robert Louis
Sparks and Ebber Sloan Bostic. Herman graduated from Cliffside High School in
1945. Then he
joined the Air Transport Command 1537th USAF Unit and served in the Phillipines
and Guam before
being honorably discharged from service in 1947.
On 16 April 1949 Herman married Eliza Chlozette
Lynn of Kings Mountain, NC. They were living in Cliffside
where Herman was employed by Cone Mills when their
first-born, Charles Herman Sparks, Jr., was born
on 8 August 1951 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital in
Shelby.
Herman graduated from Howard Business College in
the spring of 1952 and accepted employment
with Hudson Hosiery. He moved his family to Kings Mountain, where his daughter,
Karen Lynn was
born at the Kings Mountain Hospital 17 May 1954.
After resigning from Hudson Hosiery in 1959, Herman
accepted employment with U. S. Rubber
Company where he remained until 1964, going back into the textile business.
He retired from textiles
in August 1978.
Eliza Chlozette (Chloe) Lynn was the fourth child
of Robert Stevenson Lynn and Sallie Gant. Chloe
graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1948. She continued her work with
Southern Bell
Telephone Company after her marriage and progressed from operator to Assistant
Manager in
1963. She remained in this position until she retired in 984 after thirty-one
years of service.
After retiring Herman and Chloe did volunteer work
for the Red Cross Mobile. They enjoyed traveling,
having traveled to most of the continents and to all of the fifty states. They
also enjoyed being with
their children and grandchildren.
They attended First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain
where Herman served as a deacon, trustee,
Sunday School teacher, Brotherhood president, and both Herman and Chloe were
members of the
adult choir.
On 29 December 1996 Herman died of a massive heart
attact at his home in Kings Mountain. As he
had often expressed would happen, he died with little suffering and without having
to linger. Chloe
continues to reside at their home in Kings Mountain and continues to serve the
Lord as the two of
them did so many years together.
