Continuing Education

At Cliffside Mill, the employees and managers didn't just learn by doing. They often went away for short courses in their specialities, to some trade school or equipment vendor's training center. They would learn how to use and maintain new machinery, for example, or be indoctrinated for a brand new position or to enhance their skills in their present job.

In the winter of 1967-68 a group of Cliffside men undertook an extensive four-week course in management communications at Cone headquarters. Each Sunday night they drove to Greensboro, spent the week in classes, then drove home to Cliffside late on Friday's.

Years earlier, in the late 1940s or early '50s, another group received special training. They were loom fixers, learning the operation of a particular make of loom.
