First Class Otha L. Harmon, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Harmon of Gaffney,
Route 3, near Cliffside, died June 16, 1944, from wounds received
June 9, 1944, on the North Burma front. (Rutherford County News,
August 3, 1944)
His wife, Mrs. Mary Simmons Harmon, received the
message from the War Department. Private Harmon (1921-1944) entered
the U.S. Army on November 9, 1942, and went over-seas in September
of 1943. He was a member of Prospect Baptist Church. His parents,
five sisters, and six brothers survived him. The brothers were Staff
Sergeant Russell W.Harmon of Fort Lewis, Washington; Seaman First
Class Ulysses E.Harmon of Charleston; Wayne, George, Wiseman, and
Alfred Harmon. The sisters were Miss Marie Harmon, Mrs. Grady Hammett,
Mrs. Charlie Godfrey, Mrs. Taft Cobb, and Mrs. C. B. Beason. (Courtesy
