Private First Class John Womack died of wounds
received in action, according to a message received here. He was first
reported as wounded on November 17, 1944.
Private
First Class Womack (1917-1944) entered the U.S. Army in July of 1940.
He spent twenty-two months in foreign service, mostly in the British
West Indies, and returned to the United States. He was sent overseas
about six months ago. He was a graduate of the class of 1938 at Cliffside
High School.
Private First Class Womack was survived by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Womack, of Cliffside; his wife, Mrs. Gladys Alien
Womack of Forest City; and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs.
Glenn McKinney, Mrs. Ola Pearson, Mrs. Frank Aldridge, and Miss Nell
Womack all of Cliffside.
Private First Class Womack was a radio operator
for an Infantry Regiment. He was 27 years old on November 7, 1944.

A memorial service was held Sunday for Private First
Class John Reid Womack at the Cliffside Baptist Church. He died November
20, 1944, of wounds received in action three days prior to his death.
A son of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Womack of Cliffside, he married Miss Gladys
Alien of Forest City on November 19, 1943. (Forest City Courier,
