At this point the roadbed was a good ways below ground level. Over this cut was the old 4th Avenue footbridge. As the train moved along here, a crewman would stand atop the first boxcar as a lookout for trouble ahead. As they chuffed under the footbridge, the man had to squat down to avoid being swept off the train.
