The
man on this thoroughly modern advertising vehicle is Robert Edgar (“Bob”)
Haynes, son of R.R. Haynes. He started the Piedmont Bottling Works in
Rutherfordton (where
this photo was taken). Read a 1905
article from The Sun about
the startup. In 1909 or 1910 he moved the business to Cliffside.
It was in a building
about 100 yards
north
of the Ice
Plant
on
the other
side
of the railroad tracks where the road made an “S” turn. How long
it operated in Cliffside is a fact lost to history. He was the grandfather
of James Haynes, who contributed this photo.
So,
even prior to 1910, businesses were wrapping their products in the Stars and
Stripes.
